For someone who wanted to 'live by her pen', she actively sought privacy by publishing her books simply as being written 'by a Lady'. Guess the truth came out eventually, but perhaps not everyone is driven by a desire for fame; perhaps some are merely driven to write, nothing more, which would explain the extraordinary number of anonymous quotes out there.
